MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, AND HEALTH

This module focuses on the developmental foundations of mathematical learning, scientific concepts, and health-related topics for PreK-4 students. There are three objectives in this module, each covering essential areas of knowledge and skills:

Objective 12: Understand the developmental foundations of mathematical learning and problem solving, and assessment, instruction, and intervention.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of how mathematics affects children’s development and learning.
  • Understand strategies for implementing effective mathematics instruction.
  • Apply assessment knowledge for planning and modifying instruction.
  • Grasp the importance of mathematical communication, problem-solving, and connections among mathematical ideas.
  • Apply knowledge of prenumeracy skills, numeration, numbers, operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis.

Objective 13: Understand the foundations of scientific learning; fundamental concepts and processes related to the sciences; and assessment, instruction, and intervention.

  • Understand the foundations of scientific learning and its impact on children’s development.
  • Know how to implement developmentally appropriate science instruction.
  • Apply assessment strategies in science education.
  • Understand the nature of scientific knowledge and inquiry.
  • Apply knowledge in life sciences, ecology, environmental science, physical science, and earth and space science.

Objective 14: Understand the developmental foundations of learning in motor development and health; fundamental concepts and processes related to motor development and health; and assessment, instruction, and intervention.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of health, fitness, and motor development.
  • Understand criteria for selecting appropriate teaching materials and activities.
  • Implement effective instruction in motor development and health.
  • Apply assessment strategies for motor development and health.
  • Grasp principles of physical fitness, safety, and healthy choices.
  • Know activities that promote motor skills and perceptual-awareness skills.
